Google Voice gets support for three way calling and a refreshed in-call user interface

What’s changingWe’re pleased to introduce two significant updates for Google Voice: support for three way calling and an overall enhanced, redesigned in-call user interface:Three way calling makes it easier to connect callers onward with more relevant parties or loop in additional parties to keep the conversation moving. This includes situations such as:

Bringing in a translator for multilingual conversations

Including legal counsel directly to advise on relevant discussions

Facilitating smoother call transfers by introducing the receiving party

To host a call with three participants by merging two calls together - Select “Add” to lookup the contact you wish to add to the call and then “Merge” to bring the calls together.

You’ll notice that the “Add” and “Merge” options are prominent and easily accessible, which is a key theme across the refreshed in-call user interface. The update brings a consistent look and feel for Voice across all of your devices, an intuitive call layout, similar to Google Meet, and improved placement of key call controls.

Starting from the top, you'll find notifications, such as a call participant on hold. Moving down to call controls, your primary actions like the keypad and mute button, are prominently highlighted, while secondary actions like transfer, hold, and merge, are easily accessible.

What’s changing In October 2022, we announced the ability for Google Voice Standard and Premier customers to connect a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunk with Voice. SIP Link allows phone numbers (PSTN services) from local carriers to be used for Google Voice through a secure set of certified Session Border Controllers (SBCs), such as Audiocodes, Cisco, Oracle, and Ribbon. For more information, check out our original launch announcement.
Beginning today, we’re launching Voice to the following countries by expanding SIP Link availability:

Australia
Hong Kong
Indonesia
Malaysia
New Zealand
Philippines
Taiwan
Thailand
Vietnam

EMEA

Finland
Israel
Norway
Romania
South Africa

LATAM

Peru

Customers in these countries will need to purchase the new SIP Link Standard or SIP Link Premier licenses to set up SIP Link, which they can do via their Google Workspace sales representative or through the Google Workspace Partner network.

Getting started

Admins: Once you’ve configured your SIP trunks and uploaded new phone numbers, you can assign them to your users, desk phones, auto-attendants, and ring groups. Visit the Help Center to learn more about SIP Link requirements.
End users: There is no end user action required.

Transferring your personal Google Voice number to a Google Workspace business account just got easier

What’s changing We know it’s important for our users to continue maintaining an established phone number and ensure that this number stays associated with them as they move to a Google Workspace business account. For example, a solopreneur with a Voice number might need to carry their number with them to a Workspace domain as their business grows.
To solve for this, we’re pleased to introduce a significantly improved experience for transferring a personal Google Voice number to a Google Workspace account. When using Google Voice on the web, you can go directly to “Account Settings” and then to the "Transfer your number to another Voice account" section. Here, you can enter the Voice number you’d like to transfer and the Google Workspace email address it should now be associated with. Once submitted, your admin can accept the transfer.

What’s changingBeginning today, admins can assign delegates to handle other users' calls. When assigned, delegates can:

Answer calls on the delegator’s behalf
Place calls on the delegator’s behalf, including transferring the call to the delegator once connected
Transfer calls selectively to the delegator
Listen to voicemail messages and view voicemail transcripts

This can be helpful for executives who delegate some of these tasks to colleagues.

Why it mattersCall delegation is a top feature request from our customers and is critical for busy professionals and their support staff to effectively manage communications. Allowing designated individuals to handle calls on behalf of executives frees up executives' time while ensuring important communications are addressed promptly, ultimately boosting productivity for both executives and their support staff. In the future, we plan to expand this feature to include the ability for delegates to access call history, voicemail history, and inbox management.

Getting started

Admins: Visit the Help Center to learn more about setting up call delegation for your organization.
End users: If configured by your admin, you'll be notified via email if you have been assigned a delegate and what actions they can take on your behalf.

[Update - June 24, 2024]: This beta is now closed and will no longer be accepting new applicants.What’s changing Launching in beta, we’re introducing an integration between Google Voice and Salesforce that makes it easier to track details of calls made in Voice. When enabled:

Salesforce contacts will be displayed in Google Voice.
Google Voice calls will now be logged to any matching Salesforce contact.

Salesforce contacts are denoted with the Salesforce logo.

Why you’d use it

This integration helps improve visibility across the various stakeholders that rely on Salesforce as a key tool in their workflow. When enabled, Google Voice calls will be automatically logged in Salesforce, ensuring that there is a record of that interaction for all to see. Additionally, you can jump from Google Voice to the Salesforce call log to add notes and more context. This helps eliminate the need for users to switch between multiple applications and manual record keeping, and make it easier for other team members to see the latest activity in Salesforce.

Getting started

Admins:

This feature will be OFF by default and can be enabled at the Organizational Unit (OU) level. Visit the Help Center to learn more about integrating CRM with Salesforce.

To turn on the Google Voice and Salesforce integration, navigate to Apps > Google Workspace > Google Voice > Policies > Salesforce integration

You’ll then be directed to the Google Voice and Salesforce connection page to complete the set-up.

End users: You’ll see banners in Google Voice on web and mobile when this integration is enabled by your admin.

Banners inside the Voice app will indicate when Salesforce has been integrated.

After you make a Voice Call to a Salesforce contact from either our web or mobile app, you will be notified that the call is logged to Salesforce in the call log.

You’ll see when a call has been logged to Salesforce — you can click on this notification to open Salesforce.

We’re adding the ability to insert a hyperlink into a cell in the Google Sheets iOS app by selecting a cell > clicking “+” in the top left corner > Insert > Link. Enhanced spam protection through automatic labeling of suspected spam messages in Google Voice

If you're using Google Voice, you're familiar with our suspected spam caller warnings. We're extending this feature to SMS messages on Android and iOS devices. You'll see these labels within the message, and you can either:

Confirm a suspected spam message, which causes future messages from that number to go directly into the spam folder.
Mark a labeled message as not spam, after which the suspected spam label is never displayed for that number again.

Birthday decorations for people cards

In Google Contacts and across various Google Workspace products, you’ll begin to notice birthday decorations when hovering over another user’s people card. This small change can have a big impact on building deeper connections with your colleagues and stakeholders. Birthday decorations will be displayed on your birthday if you’ve added your birthday to your Google Account profile and you’ve set the information to be visible to others. | Available now for all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts. | Visit the Help Center to learn more about your Google Account profile and what information others can see.

Add an organizational unit as an attribute in your external directory

When using Directory Sync, you can now place users from the Azure Active Directory or Active Directory to a specific organizational unit on the Google Workspace side. To do so, you’ll need to add an organizational unit as an attribute in your external directory. This makes it easier to sync users who will be mapped to different organizational units on the Google Workspace side. | Directory Sync is available as an open beta to all Google Workspace customers. | Visit the Help Center to learn more about setting up users to sync based on an organizational unit attribute.

Google Voice users can manage incoming calls across individuals and groups

What’s changing Admins can now designate specific Voice users as managers of a ring group, allowing them to make changes from voice.google.com instead of the Admin console. For example, ring group managers can view and modify:

Ring group members,
Call routing rules,
Ring duration settings,
Working hours and more.

For large customers with many ring groups, delegating this responsibility to specific ring group members can help ease admin workloads, allowing them to focus on more critical tasks.

Additional details Also, Google Voice users can now call and check with their transfer target before transferring a call. This helps create a better experience for the transfer target and the transferred call participant.

If assigned the ring group manager role, you’ll see a new “Ring group” section in your voice.google.com settings.

Adding bulk conversion for place chips in Google Sheets

Earlier this year, we introduced a smart canvas feature that enables you to open a location directly in Google Maps and see a preview of the location or find directions when a Google Maps place chip is added to your Sheet. Starting this week, users can now convert links to place chips in bulk from the insert menu or cell menu. Easily set up dropdown chips in Google Sheets with a new pre-fill feature

If you select a range of cells then insert a dropdown chip, manually entered cell data will convert to pre-fill the dropdown values. Reorganizing the file and folder menu in Google Drive

Earlier this year, we introduced a refreshed interface for Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Building upon this, when right-clicking a file or folder in Drive, you will now see a new menu format. While the menu functionality remains the same, we’ve reordered and renamed menu items, and also added new sub-menus.

Updated timeline for upgrading to the in-line threaded experience in Google Chat

Earlier this year, we announced that existing spaces organized by conversation topic will be upgraded to the new in-line threaded experience by Q4 2023. We’d like to provide an update on that timing:

The upgrade will start in September 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of Q1 2024.

Ahead of the upgrade, Google Workspace admins, partners, and resellers will receive an email with more information about what to expect before any changes are made to their experience. For more information, please refer to our previous announcement.

What’s changing We’re making it easier for you to indicate your availability in Google Voice on web and mobile. Previously, you could only indicate your availability for all of your ring groups.
This update gives you greater flexibility to manage your Ring Group availability in Google Voice, without the need to sign-out of Voice or block all incoming calls using “Do Not Disturb”.
You can now customize your availability for the following:

Direct calls: if unavailable, calls will be sent to voicemail.

Get enhanced spam protection through automatic labeling of suspected spam calls in Google Voice
To help protect you from unwanted calls and potentially harmful scams, Google Voice will now show a “suspected spam caller” label on all calls that Google believes to be spam. | Available to all Google Voice customers | Learn more.

Get enhanced spam protection through automatic labeling of suspected spam calls in Google Voice

What’s changing To help protect you from unwanted calls and potentially harmful scams, Google Voice shows a “suspected spam caller” label on all calls that Google believes to be spam. Google makes this determination using the same advanced artificial intelligence that identifies billions of spam calls each month across Google’s calling ecosystem.

The new labels appear on the incoming call screen and in the user’s call history. Users can either:

Confirm a suspected spam call, which causes future calls from that number to go directly to voicemail and call history entries to be put in the spam folder
Mark a labeled call as not spam, after which the suspected spam label is never displayed for that number again

Get an alert that an incoming call is suspected spam

Updated experience for exporting your organization’s data

Google Voice Standard customers can assign phone numbers in other Voice countries in their region

Google Voice customers on the Standard subscription in Canada, Europe and the US can assign phone numbers to any supported country in their region:

Customers in Europe can assign phone numbers in supported European countries
Customers in Canada and the US can assign phone numbers in both countries

This change gives our customers on the Standard SKU the flexibility to deploy Voice across the different countries they operate in within the same region. | Available for Google Voice Standard customers only. | Learn more.

More filter effects available for Google Meet

Google Workspace users can now access a variety of new filter effects on Google Meet on the web and mobile. These filters, such as loghead, strawberry, and working bunny, can help bring an element of fun to meetings. | Learn more.

Quickly refine search results in Google Chat with search chipsWe’re expanding an existing mobile feature to the web that helps you find exactly what you’re looking for much faster using search chips that filter your search results. | Learn more.
